PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
"Never give in - never, never, never."
Sir Winston Churchill
During the dark days of the Second World War,
there was a distinct possibility that Britain would succumb
to the godless Nazi juggernaut. It would be perfectly understandable
if the British population had become demoralized and unwilling
to fight any longer. However, the gutsy stubbornness of the
Brits in the face of evil, the ringing encouragement of leaders,
such as Churchill, and no doubt the prayers of this God-fearing
nation helped to stem the tide of Nazism.
The enemy today is not so obvious. The evil
force that faces Canada and the world today is much more subtle,
so subtle, in fact, that it is often not even recognized.
Where in Europe the enemy was pounding at the gate, today
the enemy is already within the walls.
Just who is this enemy? To a great extent,
it is us. In the 60 years or so that have passed since the
end of World War II, there have been drastic changes in societal
values, and these changes could not take place without the
complicity of Canadians. Consider what has happened in just
six decades: At one time there would have been no legitimacy
accorded to explicit pornographic material, a prostitute was
not considered to be a "sex trade worker", abortion
on demand was unthinkable, there were no gay pride parades,
teenagers were not given explicit sex education in the schools
and then provided with condoms, divorce rates were nowhere
near today's numbers, most children were cared for in their
own homes, and finally, there would have been no acceptance
of same-sex marriage! Life was not perfect in the past, but
so many of the changes that have taken place have certainly
not been improvements.
I know that many of you have fought long and
hard to preserve traditional family values. Like me, I know
you must at times be very discouraged. It would be so easy
to simply throw up our hands and say, "We've done our
best - what more can we do?" It's a good thing the Brits
- and for that matter, all the other opponents of tyranny
- did not give up during World War II. They persisted, despite
many hardships, to fight for their loved ones and their countries.
We must do likewise. This time, however, the
strategy is not in directly fighting oppressors but in reaching
out to friends and neighbours to educate them about important
issues, and, it is to be hoped, to influence their vote in
the next election. We cannot turn back the clock, and while
we may deplore the direction in which this country seems to
be heading, we must not dwell on the negatives. People need
to be encouraged, not depressed. For example, the same-sex
marriage issue is not dead. (See article: Same-sex Marriage
Issue Only Suspended, p. 1). With enough public outcry and
with a change in government, this legislation can be amended.
Lots of prayers are also needed!
So many of you have been tremendous in your
efforts to protect family values, and I do hope you will all
have a well-earned rest this summer. I hope also that the
weather is kinder to those of you who have had to endure some
terrible storms, fires or flooding this Spring.
God bless!
