W.R.A.P. Anti-Pornography CAMPAIGN
The 17th Annual White Ribbon Against Pornography
Campaign (W.R.A.P.) will commence this year on October 23rd,
2005. We urge our members to participate in any way they can.
The W.R.A.P. Campaign is an excellent way to raise awareness
and to express community standards of tolerance - or perhaps
we should say intolerance - for pornography. For information
and background material on W.R.A.P. please contact C.A.S.E.
(Citizens Addressing Sexual Exploitation), which sponsors
the W.R.AP. Campaign. (See address at the end of this article)
Some Helpful Hints from C.A.S.E. on Anti-pornography
Campaign<>
- Do not work alone - it is far more effective, if possible,
to form a group from a large cross-section of the community.
- Try to get some media coverage - most local newspapers
and radio stations will provide free advertising.
- Determine who will be the spokesperson for your campaign.
This should be someone who is knowledgeable and articulate.
- Distribute small ribbons to be worn by participants for
a week, and/or
- Prepare a long, wide white ribbon which can be signed by
members of the public. These ribbons should then be sent or
presented to an appropriate government official.
- Decorate homes, business, churches, etc. with large white
bows.
In past years, in Oshawa, Ontario, several
REAL Women from the Durham Chapter, who are also members of
C.A.S.E., have set up information tables at a local shopping
centre or a large department store, and obtained many signatures
both on ribbons and petitions. In 2004 Barb Laing, our local
President, attended our MP's town hall meeting and officially
presented a large white ribbon to the local Member of Parliament,
Colin Carrie. Upon request, each year the Oshawa City Council
has officially declared the October date to be a "White
Ribbon Week Against Pornography".
Several area churches have also been involved
in the campaign. For example, at one church, the Catholic
Women's League ladies set up a table at the entrance to the
church and asked parishioners to sign a large ribbon, and
they also provided a flyer which described the dangers posed
by pornography. Many churches also provide small ribbons for
the parishioners to wear for a week and then they collect
these ribbons and present them to a Member of Parliament.
(It is a good idea to pin the small ribbons to an informative
flyer. This not only provides information, but makes the ribbons
easier to distribute.)
The W.R.A.P. campaign is certainly a worthwhile
undertaking. We must all get involved in objecting to pornography
or else it will swallow us all with its evil effects.
