Carol's Corner
The noose is tightening on freedom of thought and religion in this country, recently aided and abetted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), which should be ashamed of itself.
And who is the latest group of soon-to-be-disenfranchised Canadians? Doctors in Ontario, especially those who are observant Christians, Jews, Muslims, or “conscientious objectors” to the Zeitgeist, as far as life issues, such as abortion, morning after pills, euthanasia, artificial insemination for homosexual parents, etc. is concerned. As Lorne Gunter succinctly expressed it in his fine article, “Forcing our doctors’ hands” (National Post, August18, 2008), “If the CPSO gets its way, Ontario’s doctors will soon be stripped of their right to follow their moral convictions or religious beliefs when treating their patients. In other words, doctors will risk losing their licenses if they run afoul of Ontario’s human rights police.”
It seems that this “turning of the screw” might be linked to the case of a plastic surgeon, who declined to perform an operation on the genitals of a transgendered person because the doctor’s expertise was in dealing with the female anatomy. The Ontario HRC has accepted the patient’s case against the surgeon.
So, instead of defending one of its doctor’s integrity, experience, and judgement, the CPSO has decided to take the side of Ontario’s kangaroo courts and become an enforcer for the OHRC: very scary—and very unjust.
This proposed policy, “Physicians and the Ontario Human Rights Code”, isn’t set in stone yet, but not for lack of trying on the part of the CPSO, which only posted the policy on its web site at the end of June, and allowed until only August 15th for feedback. Most physicians aren’t even aware of this policy.
The courageous and savvy group, “Physicians for Life” (PFL), raised the alarm and requested a 90 day extension for feedback. (They were successful: the new date is now September 12th.) Dr. Will Johnson, PFL President, said in a press release, “If doctors feel coerced into compromising their deepest convictions . . . that’s a problem—not only for the integrity of physicians, but also for the welfare of their patients.” One wonders if the politically correct appeasers at the CPSO have a clue about what Dr. Johnson means. (I know if I have a choice, I want a doctor with a conscience, not one who, like a drone, does whatever the Queen Bee wants.)
There’s a severe doctor shortage in Canada. If this policy goes through, the best in the profession—those with moral integrity—will be likely to retire or leave the country/province, and young people, with moral/religious convictions surrounding life issues, will likely avoid becoming doctors.
It seems I say this every month, but Canada appears to be on the fast track to becoming a gulag, where agents of the state and its enforcers say, “You can think what we tell you.” Other professional organizations, such as those of teachers and nurses, have already been hijacked by left-wing ideologues, who have no hesitation is imposing “Equity policies”, which are used to intimidate, persecute, and punish any non-conforming members—often the best in the bunch.
Physicians for Life are fighting back. Bravo to them and I hope they get a lot of support from their colleagues. If they lose this one, we all lose. |
