Carol's Corner

During the build up to the recent elections in Canada and the United States, I was struck by the fact that so many good people seem to be unmoored from any sense of moral and intellectual consistency. From personal experience, it seems to me that decades of moral relativism and a declining belief in God and the corresponding commitment to uphold His standards, as set out in the Ten Commandments, has seen a sad and ominous fulfillment of G.K. Chesterton’s saying, if you don’t believe in something, you’ll fall for anything.

Seemingly sensible people of good will, who would disapprove of gossip, bullying, and putdowns in their personal lives, seem all too willing to take as gospel truth the gossip, bullying, and putdowns fed to them by the mainstream Media (MSM)—almost exclusively targeted at conservative candidates. Thus, while the MSM blow out of all proportion the foibles—and even the talents! (governing a state or effectively managing the longest running minority government is a nothing qualification) — of the Sarah Palins and Stephen Harpers, they cover up the deficiencies of and scandals associated with the Stéphane Dions and Barack Obamas. (In Canada, one of the worst examples of this propaganda machine is the CBC, which has, on our dime, blatantly shilled for the left wing.)

Michael Crichton (R.I.P.) wrote about this disturbing phenomenon (in 2003): “The deterioration of the American media is dire loss for our country. When distinguished institutions like the New York Times [read most of the MSM] can no longer differentiate between factual content and editorial opinion, but rather mix both freely [or leave out fact altogether!] on their front page, then who will hold anyone to a higher standard?”

Indeed, the good people I know, who have fallen for the lowest common denominator, seem to prove his point. Although they should know better, they absolve the media of their responsibility to give the facts and provide fair commentary, versus blatant propaganda. In doing so, otherwise reasonable people also absolve themselves of the responsibility to discover the truth. The submission of far too many to the lies of the MSM puts democracy in dire jeopardy.

Unfortunately, for those of us, who have made it our business to be well informed, it also puts friendships in jeopardy! So, despite the fact that the increasingly repressive political culture of this country (think Human Rights Commissions) makes our obligation more and more difficult, we must persevere. From 2 Timothy 4:
“. . . be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching./For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings,/and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths./As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”
Amen to that!
