Eric Lowther, MP - Canadian Alliance

Summary by Marguerite Raes
Manitoba Chapter, REAL Women

Eric Lowther is a Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre and the Canadian Alliance Party Family Critic. In this capacity, he has been an outstanding spokesperson and tireless advocate for the traditional values of marriage and family in Parliament. He has, during his time in Parliament, built up strong information network which has greatly strengthened and assisted the pro-family movement in Canada.

Eric Lowther praised REAL Women. That is, it was individual members of our organization who were present at the United Alternative Conference who led the way and insisted that the new party support the traditional family.

Mr. Lowther said REAL Women members were also instrumental in the Canadian Alliance Party defining family and marriage in their policies during its conference on the United Alternative. He stressed the importance of networking on life and family issues, and working together, as there is strength in numbers. Presently there are over 150 organizations working on pro-family issues in Canada.

Petitions count! There were over 500,000 signatures against the BC Court of Appeal decision to strike down the law prohibiting possession of child pornography. On Bill C-23 (same-sex benefits), Mr. Lowther stated that MPs received more mail, e-mail, telephone calls, than for any other issue. We cannot give up! We're not receiving any media or press coverage, but our team efforts are creating huge pressure on those in Parliament.

More and more people are connected to the internet, making information on pro-life, pro-family issues more available.

Mr. Lowther said we need to reach those people "in the middle" as they are living their lives. These are the people who are busy with life, care for family, but who don't want to be confronted with issues that make them uncomfortable. Start by convincing these people about the evil of child pornography, and "it's time to take a stand." Keep track of your MP through the internet, which will tell you how he/she voted on any issue.

Many serious issues are on the horizon. These included genetic manipulation, new reproductive technologies, cloning, organ growing donation and most grievous of all, the sale of body parts. Again, those in "the middle" don't know about these issues and we must inform them.

Eric's wife, Colleen, also attended the conference with her husband and she graciously added a few words, encouraging us to stand firm in what we believe, and to keep nudging our children as they are the grassroots and the future of Canada.
