WORLD CONGRESS OF FAMILIES III MEXICO CITY 2004
You will
recall the astonishing success of the two previous World Congress
of Families held in Prague, in the Czech Republic in 1997,
and in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1999. The third World Congress
of Families was supposed to have taken place simultaneously,
linked by satellite, in Mexico City and Dubai, in the United
Arab Emirate, on October 27 - 30, 2002.
Then,
the terrorists stuck the World Trade Centre in New York City
on September 11, 2001. This act of terrorism created uncertainties
about international stability and also raised questions regarding
the ease, cost and predictability of international travel.
In addition, several key pledges of financial support in the
US were affected by the economic downturn as a result of the
tragedy.
Under
these circumstances, a decision was made to defer the Congress
of the Family until the year 2004.
The good
news is that conference organizers for World Congress
of Families III are now arranging for the Congress to take
place tentatively in early 2004, possibly in Mexico City.
The General Assembly of the United Nations has designated
2004 as an International Year of the Family, and it is important
that the year begin with a proper focus on the defense of
real families.
It will
be a great occasion and we hope REAL Women members will attend.
This is just a heads up notice, and we'll keep you advised
as plans develop.
