SHEILA COPPS' PINOCCHIO NOSE
Sheila
Copps, Minister of Heritage, feminist, generous fund provider
of the scandalous Court Challenges Program, leadership candidate
for the Liberal party, appears to have trouble speaking the
truth. Perhaps, like Pinocchio, she should be checking her
mirror several times a day to see if her nose is growing.
This flaw in Ms. Copps' character was exposed in the National
Post (December 6, 2001) when, to everyone's shock and
bewilderment, flags were ordered to half-mast in honour of
the victims of the tragic killing, by a deranged man, of 14
young female engineering students at Montreal's Ecole Polythehnique
on December 6, 1989.
The
feminists have been exploiting the tragic deaths of those
14 young women ever since, claiming that this event was an
example of men's (all men's) basic hatred of women.
In December
1991, feminists prevailed on the House of Commons to unanimously
pass a motion designating December 6 as a National Day of
Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. As a result,
the Department of Canadian Heritage was directed to order
the lowering of the flag between 11:00 a.m. and sunset on
the Peace Tower, as tradition has dictated since the 1920s,
to mark the anniversary of the Armistice of WW I on November
11, 1918.
This
order apparently was not enough for Ms. Copps, caught up in
her perpetual enthusiasm for feminist causes. On December
6, 2001, for the first time in history, flags were flown at
half mast, not just on the Peace Tower, but also on every
federal building, military base and Canadian military ship
- including the five in the Arabian Sea serving as part of
the Afghanistan offensive. These actions were taken to honour
the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against
Women.
According
to tradition, the flag is lowered to half mast on the Peace
Tower only on November 11 to honour Canada's over 100,000
men who suffered and died during two world wars and the Korean
War. The lowering of the flags on every Canadian government
establishment and the ships at sea, on December 6, 2001, meant
that the deaths of the 14 women in Montreal received more
official recognition than the deaths of our brave soldiers
fallen in battle.
When
the National Post broke this story, Ms. Copps immediately
claimed that she was not aware that her department had ordered
the flags to be half-masted in honour of the 14 women, killed
in Montreal.
She
was quoted in the National Post story on December 6,
2001 as stating: "I didn't know anything about it.
It's an anomaly," she said, "that should
be fixed." Check your mirror, Ms. Copps.
Professor
David Murrel, at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton
and editor of the "WatchDog" publication*, which
deals with government duplicity, applied, under the Access
to Information Act, for documents relating to the flag
half-masting incident. As a result, it appears that Ms. Copps
was lying about this incident and her duplicity has been exposed.
According
to these documents, in a letter dated October 3, 2001, from
Gilles Pineau, Senior Policy Advisory, Heritage Department
addressed to the Manager of States' Ceremonial and Protocol,
it was stated that with the Minister's concurrence,"
the flag protocol had been amended to mark the Day of Remembrance
and Action on Violence Against Women.
The letter
stated as follows:
With the Minister's concurrence, please note that the practice
for half masting as stated in the Department of Canadian
Heritage publication, Flag Etiquette in Canada, has been
amended.
on
the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against
Women (December 6), the Flag on the Peace Tower as well
as flags on all government buildings and establishments
within Canada are to be flown at half-mast from sunrise
to sunset.
Further,
a series of e-mails dated December 7, 2001, were released
under the Access to Information Act, between the Communication
Office for the Heritage Department and the Communication Director
within Ms. Copps' Ministry Office. It was clearly pointed
out in these e-mails that the directive to lower the flags
throughout Canada, and on our ships at sea on December 6,
came directly from the Minister's office with her concurrence,
and not from the Heritage Department itself.
In short,
Ms. Copps had independent knowledge and gave her personal
approval to the lowering of all the flags on December 6, 2001.
Obviously Ms. Copps can not be counted on to speak the truth
or accept responsibility for her actions.
It's
frightening, indeed, that such a Pinocchio nose intends to
run for the leadership of the Liberal party.
