Our organization is overwhelmed by the ever increasing pressures on us created by the court challenges attacking family life in Canada.

We have been in the courts on all levels on the same-sex marriage issue - now heading to the Supreme Court of Canada both on our Application to Appeal and the federal government's Reference questions. We just completed the spanking case before the Supreme Court. We have now learned that the three parent family case has been appealed to the Ontario Court of Appeal (not our favourite court). The latter case, you recall, involved a lesbian mother of a 2 year old boy, who has appealed to the court, with the support of the child's natural father, to declare her lesbian partner to be also the child's mother, i.e., for a court ruling that the child has two mothers and a father. This case has far-reaching implications for the family which may lead to the redefining in law of the words "mother" and "father" and "family." This, of course, is the purpose of bringing this legal challenge.

This flood of cases in the courts is deliberate, as activists realize they can avoid the tiresome and difficult route of legislative change by the expedience of moving their cause to the courts, where liberal judges will provide them with rights that would never be achieved by way of the legislatures. Money is no object to them, since most of these cases are funded by the notorious Court Challenges Program, whereas we must fund our many cases by ourselves.

What is to be done? We can throw up our hands on the reasonable grounds that we no longer have the financial means to continue the struggle. If we do, however, we are haunted by our failure to our commitment to protect and support family life in Canada. Also, to fail to provide legal resistance to these legal challenges will result in a vacuum, which will only encourage activists to further erode family life through the courts.

We are working long hours to keep on top of these perilous situations with briefs, press releases, Alert Bulletins (all on our website www.realwomenca.com), phone calls, faxes, emails. It makes for long stressful days. We can manage all these emotional, physical and intellectual pressures, but the financial pressure is something that we cannot deal with without outside assistance.

We are therefore asking our faithful, wonderful members, yet again, to come to our assistance in these terrible dark days to carry on our work in the courts. There must be a public record to show that there were determined people who did not support the collapse of our society that is now taking place, but fought long and hard against it. History must show that Canada's current turbulence faced fierce resistance. REAL Women is here to provide that resistance, as difficult as it its, but we do gravely need your financial and moral support in this struggle. We cannot continue without you, and we would be most grateful for your financial support.
