PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We are bruised and battered, but not beaten! Despite the fact that a majority of our elected parliamentarians voted in favour of Bill C-250 to give sodomy legal acceptance as well as protecting the homosexual lifestyle, REAL Women will continue to fight for traditional family values.

What does the future hold for Canadians? I don't know. I can only trust that common sense will prevail, and that any efforts to stifle the voice of the majority will not succeed.

REAL Women have, in the past, been accused of promoting hatred against homosexuals. Just what is hatred as set out in MP Svend Robinson's Bill C-250? Webster's dictionary defines it as an "emotion of extreme dislike; active ill-will." I do not hate anyone. In fact, my personal faith requires that I respect, even love, all persons. Nor does the organization of REAL Women promote hatred against any individual or group.

When REAL Women speaks out against homosexuality, it is not from hatred, but from love and concern: concern for the well-being of our country; concern for our vulnerable youth; concern for the freedom of Canadians to express their religious and social beliefs. If our public statements are hurtful to any individual, we are sorry, but the truth cannot be subservient to the inclinations of a very small minority of the population.

Another criticism of REAL Women is that it is against equality for homosexuals. Not so. All persons are equal in the sight of God, and all persons in Canada are entitled to the basic necessities of life and liberty. However, equality does not mean all persons are the same. Women can have babies; men cannot. Does that mean men are not equal to women? Try as I might, I cannot grow over five feet in height. Does that make me of less worth than my taller (and slimmer!) friends?

REAL Women certainly does not condone violence of any kind, nor do we enjoy criticizing our fellow citizens. However, no matter how unpalatable they may be, the facts about the homosexual lifestyle must be presented to the public. We owe our young people the truth about a lifestyle that is unhealthy and dangerous. For example, how many boys, unsure about their sexuality (not unusual for teenagers), are being counselled that if they have such tendencies they cannot change? The world today is a very confusing place for our young people, and they desperately need the support and guidance provided by traditional values. That is why REAL Women has travelled twice to Geneva in the past few months to present such concerns to the Committee monitoring the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child - which is supposed to be all about protecting children. (See "Canada Contravenes the UN Convention on the Child." )

The Reality newsletter has for many years tried to present the facts about issues such as drug abuse, child prostitution, homosexuality, radical feminism, etc. We are extremely careful to present only factual information, carefully vetted by our legal expert, Gwen Landolt. A measure of our veracity is that we have never once been sued for slander or libel.

Perhaps not all the results of the recent Parliamentary vote on same-sex marriage are negative if conscionable Canadians are shocked enough to become actively involved in the political process, and be ready for the binding vote on this issue when it is introduced by the Liberal government. It is about time our elected representatives reflected the wishes of their constituents rather than those of their political bosses.

Many, many thanks to all of you who actively lobbied on behalf of traditional marriage. You have and do make a difference. The closeness of the vote, despite political arm-twisting, made it very clear that Canadians want the definition of marriage to remain the union of one man and one woman. Keep up your marvellous work!

God bless!
