PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Sometimes it is almost impossible not to get discouraged about what is happening in this country. The anti-life, anti-family, anti-religious tide threatens to engulf us and we come close to despairing of the kind of future our children must face. And yet … not all the news is bad.

As you will read in this issue of the Reality, a major initiative to promote sexual orientation by the United Nations was withdrawn, thanks to the good sense of many delegates and the many, many people who sent e-mails, letters, and phone calls protesting this initiative.

In the United States, partial birth abortions have been outlawed, and the unborn child is receiving some recognition under "Stacey's Law" (where a child murdered in the womb is considered to be a person).

The World Congress of Families held recently in Mexico was a real success. Many delegates, from all over the world, were able to meet and share their ideas and concerns. The benefits of this Congress will be far-reaching.

Mel Gibson's movie, "The Passion of the Christ", has stunned its critics by its unimaginable popularity. No doubt other film producers will try to emulate Mel's success, and one can expect that there will soon be inspirational programs and films offered to a spiritually-starved public.

Some television broadcasters in the United States are already attempting to curb the profanity and nudity in certain television programs, and it is to be hoped this initiative will expand to take in a broad range of programming.

Unfortunately, in Canada, Bill C-250 was passed (I should say "rammed") through the Senate. My initial reaction was one of disappointment, of course. I had hoped that this "Chamber of Sober Second Thought" would give due consideration to the concerns of so many thousands of Canadians who e-mailed, wrote and telephoned to protest this nefarious piece of legislation. Instead the Liberal sheep bleated their "ayes" as ordered by their political keepers.

I wonder, however, whether the passage of Bill C-250 will perhaps have some surprising unwelcome repercussions for this government. There are a great many people who always voted Liberal in the past, who will now seriously question their allegiance to a party that so utterly ignores the concerns of its constituents.

I wonder also whether this endorsement of the homosexual lifestyle will come as something of a shock to some of our complacent religious leaders, who might have been able to influence this vote had they been willing to step out in faith and had vociferously and publicly challenged the powers-that-be.

Many, many thanks to Senator Anne Cools and the other Senators who fought so hard to stop Bill C-250. If it had not been for them, the bill would have slipped through with little public input. At the very least, a great many Canadians are now aware of how unconscionable this government has been in promoting the homosexual agenda.

And many, many thanks to all of you who have been so supportive of REAL Women, and who have given of your time and money to help in the fight for family values. Please do not be discouraged if it seems your letters and e-mails have been in vain. Don't let this stop you from continuing to let your Members of Parliament know how you feel about family issues. If enough people had lobbied Parliament when the hate legislation amendment was first introduced (and I know many of you did), it might never have reached third reading. Other issues, such as legalized euthanasia, are bound to arise in the future. You need to be there.

In any event, we Canadians must not let the threat of "legal action" inhibit us from speaking out on issues of morality and health. We serve God first, not a government that betrays the trust of its people. You can be sure REAL Women will not waver in its efforts to protect the Canadian family.

God bless!
