PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
As I look back at the year 2004, I can certainly
confirm it was a busy year. Apart from hosting our annual
conference and publishing our newsletter REALity, six
times a year, we sent numerous letters and articles to newspapers
and Members of Parliament, we produced brochures, we were
involved in court interventions, and we were represented at
international conferences. (In our November/December issue
of REALity, there is a detailed list of our activities
last year.) Not bad for a volunteer organization which receives
no government funding!
Of course, none of these activities would
have been possible without the prayers, membership subscriptions
and donations from our supporters. I cannot tell you how encouraging
it is to hear from so many REAL Women - and men! - who urge
us to continue with our work.
At this time I would like to give a special
vote of thanks to Gwen Landolt, our National Vice-President,
who is also the author of so many briefs, articles and letters.
Thanks to her expertise as a constitutional lawyer, Gwen ensures
that even the most controversial issues are handled in a professional
manner.
I would also like to give special thanks to
our hard workers in the Ottawa and Toronto offices, who keep
the organization running smoothly. Somehow our Treasurer,
Sophie, manages to keep us solvent from month to month. (She
does a lot of praying, I understand!)
The year 2005 looks to be just as hectic as
2004. There are anti-family initiatives on an international
level which will need to be addressed, the national day-care
issue is certainly a hot potato, and of course, countering
the proposed same-sex marriage legislation will continue to
require every possible means at our disposal. It is really
hard to understand, especially in light of the fact that the
Canadian birth rate has now dipped below replacement rate,
why our government is seemingly so eager to implement measures
which further undermine the traditional family!
