THE LIBERAL'S ANTI-MARRIAGE BILL C-38 MEETS FIERCE OPPOSITION
Canadians have acquired a reputation throughout
our history of being deferential to authority. This proposition
has now been called into question by the fierce reaction of
ordinary Canadians to the Liberal Government's anti-marriage
Bill C-38 which expands the traditional definition of marriage
as a union of a man and woman to include same-sex couples.
The Canadian public is furious with the Liberal Government
for this social engineering project. The Liberal Government,
in turn, has been genuinely shocked and dismayed by the anger
that Bill C-38 has engendered. It never expected that the
Bill would meet with such a strong negative response. The
Liberals believed that Canadians would be mildly annoyed by
the bill, but would then learn to live with it, and resignedly
accept it. This has not happened. A recent Compass Poll indicated
66% of the population now oppose same-sex marriage. (February
2, 2005.)
MPs' offices have been literally overrun with a barrage of
faxes, letters and e-mails. There have been numerous demonstrations
in front of constituency offices. Letters to the editor across
the country objecting to the legislation have not let up.
Clearly, Canadians have been riled as they seldom have been
before. Not only are Canadians furious about the legislation,
they are also fuming about the way it has been foisted upon
them.
In this regard, someday, someone will write
the true story on how the Liberal Government tried to manipulate
Canadians into accepting its anti-marriage Bill C-38.
It all began with a handful of arrogant - about 22 only out
of a total of approximately 2000 - federally appointed judges
in Canada, who decided to allow same-sex couples to marry.
In doing so, these judges ignored the law, history and common
sense and revolutionized marriage, by expanding it to include
same-sex couples. In making their decision the judges failed
to take into consideration the importance of the traditional
definition of marriage to the public. The public also found
it hard to swallow that the same-sex marriage challenges were
largely paid for by themselves the taxpayers, through the
federal Court Challenges programme, whose sole source of income
is the federal Heritage Department.
As a result of their decisions on same-sex
marriage, the courts have experienced damage to their credibility,
and there has been a loss of respect for judges themselves.
Judges have no special insight into the issue, since they
are merely lawyers with political connections. Yet, they felt
entitled to turn marriage on its head in their zeal to gain
international recognition for their "progressive"
stretching of the boundaries of rights to include same-sex
couples in legal marriages.
The decision of these judges was affirmed
by the Liberal Government when it decided against appealing
their decision to the Supreme Court of Canada. Why risk what
the government considered a gain (e.g. same-sex marriage,)
by way of the decisions of the provincial appeal courts, by
appealing the matter to the Supreme Court? A handful of Liberal
Government officials - just four of them - a politician and
three bureaucrats, made the decision to manipulate the issue
politically by both declining to appeal the cases and by manipulating
the Parliamentary process in the same-sex marriage cause.
These four are: former Justice Minister, Mr. Martin Cauchon,
Deputy Minister of Justice, Morris Rosenberg, Clerk of the
Privy Council, Alex Himelfarb, and Paul Genest, policy advisor
to former Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien. These four
pulled the political strings to bring about same-sex marriage.
(See Reality, July/August, 2004 p.12, "Martin Cauchon
Reveals the Liberal Political Strategy Behind Same-Sex Marriage.")
When the history of this story is written,
it will also include the remarkable fight mounted by the unprecedented
efforts of Evangelicals, Jews, Catholics, Sikhs, Hindus, and
Muslims, in order to prevent this bill being passed into law.
In addition to writing to the government themselves to object
to Bill C-38, these religious leaders also encouraged their
followers to become actively involved with this issue and,
largely, they did.
Finally, included in this story will also be the astounding
efforts of the various pro-family organizations in Canada
who also formed a seamless wall of resistance to the Government's
Bill C-38. (See REALITY Article - Pro-Family groups in Canada
Organize Against the Anti-Marriage Bill C-38, See p. 6.)
Another example is the efforts of Link Byfield
and his organization, Citizens Centre for Freedom and Democracy,
which purchased billboards in B.C. and Ontario to raise the
pertinent questions as to why Canadians are being denied a
referendum on this crucial issue.
The Liberal Government never contemplated
that it would be fighting for the life of its Bill on so many
different fronts. The struggle is so fierce because the stakes
are high: the outcome will determine the fate of our country.
At the time of writing, we do not know the
outcome of this mighty struggle. We do know, however, that
the Canadian public gave its all in the battle, as did many
faith groups and pro-family organizations. The arrogant Liberals
have been wounded, as has the judiciary, by this struggle.
These elites deserve to be. They thought that Canadians could
be pushed around on the issue, as they have been previously
on so many other issues. These elites were wrong.
